10 athletes from 10 different sports have been provided with Olympic scholarship focusing on the 2024 Summer Olympics to be held in Paris, France. The Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) informed that the players have been selected based on the recommendations of the respective sports associations which has been accepted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Sanyog Kapali of table tennis (individual), Payish Yonjan of fencing, Nasir Yaha Hussain of swimming (200m freestyle), Prince Dahal of badminton (individual), Manita Shrestha Pradhan of judo (under 56 kg), Sushmita Nepal of shooting (10-minute air rifle), Taekwondo’s Unisia Rai (under 49 kg), Dance Sport’s Deepak Lama (B Bowing), Golf’s Subash Tamang (individual) and Weightlifting’s Sagar Bhandari (under 109 kg) are the players selected for scholarship.
According to the NOC, the athletes selected for the scholarship will receive $750 per month and the scholarship will continue until the final selection for the Olympics. Furthermore, selected players will receive the scholarship till the Olympics. The money provided by the NOC will be utilized on the processes required for training, international participation, game materials, insurance, health test and other preparations.
NOC Vice President and Executive Director Chaturanandraj Baidhya expressed his belief that the Olympic scholarship will help Nepali athletes in their preparation for Olympics, ‘The scholarship mainly targets Olympic selection. It is to ensure that players won’t face any sort of circumstances in the preparation for the Olympic selection,’ said Baidhya. The IOC has started providing this sort of scholarship since the 2004 Athens Olympics.
