Kathmandu – The women’s national volleyball team of Nepal registered its second consecutive victory in the AVC Asian Central Zone Women’s and Men’s Volleyball Championship underway in Bangladesh. Earlier, Nepal had defeated Sri Lanka in 3-2 sets in their opening match of the women’s category on Thursday.
On Friday, defending champions Nepal won their match against the Maldives in straight sets at Saheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium located in Mirpur, Dhaka. Nepal registered a comfortable straight set win of 25-11, 25-9 and 25-5 over Maldives in their second league round.
Coach Jagdish Prasad Bhatta had given a break to Nepal’s top players Pratibha Mali and Saraswati Chaudhary during the first two sets anticipating a comparatively weak team of the Maldives. When the two players entered the field in the third set, the result was one-sided with a 25-5 victory for Nepal.
Earlier, Nepal had defeated Sri Lanka in 3-2 set in the opening match on Thursday.
With the second consecutive win, Nepal have emerged as a strong contender to reach the final. Nepal have five points from two matches. Nepal will next face hosts Bangladesh on Saturday followed by a clash against Uzbekistan in the last round of the league.
Six different countries including hotsts Bangladesh, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan are competing in the women’s category of the championship.
The top two teams from the league round will compete in the final scheduled for December 29.
Similarly, Nepal is playing against Uzbekistan in the men’s category later today. The match is scheduled for 5:45 pm Nepal time.
Five different countries are competing in the men’s section. The participating teams include hosts Bangladesh, Nepal, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan.
