Haryana lifts PM Cup volleyball title

Kathmandu – Haryana Sports Club of India have lifted the title of the eighth edition of Sagarmatha Cement Prime Minister Cup International Invitational Women’s Volleyball Championship on Monday.

The visiting team defeated Nepal Police Club in straight sets in the title clash held at the covered hall of Nepalgunj Stadium. Haryana had to struggle hard to win the first set 26-24.

Police were lagging behind 18-24 but managed to score six consecutive points to tie the set at 24-24, but they couldn’t give continuity to the winning form and conceded the set.

The second set was also a close contest which Haryana won 26-24. Likewise, Police presented a tough challenge in the third set as well but ultimately lost by a close margin of 25-23. Haryana were lagging behind at the start but they bounced back late on to win the set and become the champions.

Haryana had earlier defeated Police 3-2 in the league round.

Haryana bagged a purse of Rs 500,000 along with the title. Nepal Police Club walked away with a cash prize of Rs 250,000.

Earlier in the third-place play off, Tribhuvan Army Club registered a straight sets victory over New Diamond Club to finish third in the championship. Army bagged Rs 100,000 while New Diamond settled for Rs 50,000.

A total of four teams from Nepal and two from India had participated in the championship that kicked off on March 24.
